Bursa Malaysia Suspends Intraday Short Selling on AirAsia X After Shares Fall Beyond Threshold

KUALA LUMPUR — Bursa Malaysia has temporarily suspended intraday short-selling (IDSS) for shares of AirAsia X Bhd after the airline’s stock price declined beyond the exchange’s threshold during Thursday’s trading session.

The suspension will remain in effect until 8.30am on the following trading day.

The measure was triggered after AirAsia X shares dropped by more than 15 per cent from the reference price, activating Bursa Malaysia’s automatic suspension mechanism designed to maintain orderly trading conditions.

During the afternoon session, the company’s share price fell by 26 sen, representing a decline of approximately 15.48 per cent, to RM1.42 as of 4.10pm.

Earlier in the day, the stock had opened at RM1.73 before coming under sustained selling pressure throughout the trading session.

The sharp decline prompted the exchange to temporarily halt intraday short-selling in order to prevent additional downward pressure on the counter.

The IDSS suspension mechanism is part of Bursa Malaysia’s market control framework aimed at limiting excessive volatility when a stock experiences a sudden and significant price drop.

By suspending short-selling temporarily, the exchange provides an opportunity for market conditions to stabilise while investors reassess the situation.

Despite the suspension, normal trading activities for AirAsia X shares remain unaffected and can continue as usual on the exchange.

At the time of reporting, a total of 80.52 million shares had been traded during the session, indicating strong market activity in the counter despite the notable price decline.

AirAsia X has frequently been among the actively traded counters on Bursa Malaysia, attracting considerable interest from retail investors due to its price movements and trading liquidity.

The suspension on intraday short-selling is expected to be lifted at 8.30am on the next trading day, allowing the activity to resume if the stock’s price stabilises within the exchange’s trading parameters.
