No Immediate Evacuation for Malaysian Peacekeepers in Lebanon, Defence Ministry Confirms
Malaysia monitoring security developments closely as tensions rise between Israeli forces and Hezbollah
PETALING JAYA, March 4 — The Malaysian government has confirmed that there is currently no need to evacuate members of the Malaysian Battalion (MALBATT) deployed in southern Lebanon, despite heightened tensions in parts of the Middle East.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the security situation in the area of responsibility for MALBATT 850-13 remains under control, allowing Malaysian peacekeepers to continue their mission under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
According to the minister, all Malaysian personnel stationed in the region are safe and maintaining operational readiness while carrying out their duties as part of the international peacekeeping force.
“The safety of every member of the Malaysian Armed Forces is always our top priority,” he said in a statement released today.
He stressed that although no evacuation is currently necessary, the government has prepared contingency plans to ensure rapid response should the security environment deteriorate.
These preparations include the possibility of emergency evacuation and enhanced protection measures for Malaysian personnel if required.
Highest State of Operational Readiness
Khaled explained that MALBATT troops stationed in southern Lebanon are currently maintaining the highest level of readiness as a precautionary measure.
The Ministry of Defence, through the Joint Forces Headquarters (Markas Angkatan Bersama), continues to monitor the evolving situation closely.
This monitoring effort is conducted in cooperation with UNIFIL and other international partners involved in peacekeeping operations in the region.
Such coordination ensures that Malaysian authorities receive up-to-date intelligence and security assessments regarding developments on the ground.
The government believes that constant monitoring and strong coordination with international agencies are essential in ensuring the safety of Malaysian personnel deployed overseas.
Rising Military Activity in Southern Lebanon
The minister acknowledged that there has been a noticeable increase in military activity between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
This escalation has prompted international peacekeeping forces, including MALBATT, to heighten their vigilance in the region.
Despite these developments, the overall security situation within the UNIFIL area of operations remains stable enough for peacekeeping activities to continue without disruption.
UNIFIL forces play a crucial role in maintaining calm along the sensitive border areas and helping to prevent further escalation of hostilities.
Malaysia’s participation in the mission is part of its longstanding commitment to global peacekeeping efforts under the United Nations framework.
Malaysia’s Contribution to Global Peacekeeping
Malaysian peacekeepers have been involved in international peacekeeping missions for decades, reflecting the country’s commitment to promoting global stability and humanitarian cooperation.
In Lebanon, MALBATT personnel are responsible for monitoring security conditions, conducting patrols and supporting the broader mission of maintaining peace in conflict-affected communities.
Beyond security duties, Malaysian troops are also known for their humanitarian outreach programmes, which include community assistance and engagement with local populations.
These efforts have earned Malaysian peacekeepers recognition for their professionalism and dedication to peacekeeping operations.
Government Ready to Act if Situation Changes
While there is currently no requirement for evacuation, the Malaysian government remains alert to the rapidly evolving security environment in the Middle East.
Authorities have emphasised that contingency plans remain in place should circumstances require immediate action to protect Malaysian personnel.
For now, officials have reassured the public that all members of MALBATT 850-13 deployed in southern Lebanon remain safe and fully prepared to continue their peacekeeping mission.
The Defence Ministry said it will continue to monitor developments closely and take appropriate measures if the security situation changes in the coming days or weeks.
