PM Term Limit Will Not Affect King’s Powers or Parliamentary Confidence Role, Says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR, March 2 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has assured Parliament that the proposed constitutional amendment to limit the prime minister’s tenure to 10 years will not undermine the powers of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong or Parliament’s authority to determine government confidence.

Speaking during the second reading of the amendment bill, Anwar said the proposal is fully aligned with the Federal Constitution.

He said it preserves the foundations of Malaysia’s parliamentary democracy.

King’s authority and Parliament’s powers remain intact

Anwar stressed that the amendment will not reduce the King’s constitutional powers.

He said the Dewan Rakyat’s role in determining confidence remains unchanged.

He said institutional integrity will be strengthened.

Reform aimed at strengthening democratic governance

He described the term limit as a major democratic reform.

He said it will improve public trust.

He said leadership accountability will be enhanced.

He said it ensures leadership remains tied to public mandate.

Calls for bipartisan support

Anwar urged Members of Parliament to support the amendment.

He said it is more than a legal change.

He said it is a step toward stronger governance.

He said it will leave a lasting democratic legacy.
