33,319 xEV units recorded as of Sept 30 – Tengku Zafrul

KUALA LUMPUR: The number of electrified vehicles (xEV) has reached 33,319 units as of September 30, 2024, said Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.

He said that overall, this number of xEVs represents about five percent of the total number of the industry (TIV) in the same period.

“The number of xEVs, including battery-powered electric vehicles (BEVs), is approximately over 15,000,” he said in a question and answer session at the Dewan Rakyat today.

He answered an additional question from Datuk Mohd Isam Mohd Isa (BN-Tampin), who wanted to know the ministry’s stance on hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), given that the government wants to boost the use of BEVs.

Tengku Zafrul said the government sees the use of HEVs and PHEVs as still relevant to achieve the targets set by the government.

Previously, the government aimed for 20 percent of the annual number of new vehicles by 2030 to consist of xEVs.

“The use of HEV and PHEV vehicles supports the country’s desire to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tengku Zafrul said a total of 4,984 applications for the Electric Motorcycle Use Promotion Scheme known as MARiiCas had been approved for the program.

Through the rebate, Malaysians with an annual income of RM120,000 and below will be given a subsidy in the form of a cash rebate of RM2,400 for the purchase of a motorcycle and RM200 per month for 12 months for subscription applications. It will end on December 31st.

It is a rebate scheme for the purchase or subscription of electric motorcycles by the Malaysian Automotive Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) under Budget 2024 aimed at encouraging people to switch to electric-based vehicles.

“If it continues, many will benefit and have the opportunity to use electric vehicle technology at a reasonable price,” he said.
